since 2018, going on with Fundació Marilles and Ocean Observer's Hybo39

Many friends look for an update about what I'm doing now, and frankly it is a frenzy exciting time...

I resume what's going on in a few lines and links.

You can check in my 'marine filtered' CV some of my 'historical' background related to environmental consultancy works and activism to foster a better marine environment

In 2012 I was contracted by SUNCE/WWF Med to do a survey about how to  organize and develop sustainable nautical tourism in the National Park of Lastovo in Croatia in the basis of the lessons learnt in the Cabrera National Park (protecting the posidonia seabeds deploying mooring systems through planning based on boat counting and managing of the demand)

In 2017 the Fundació Marilles started an ambitious project with the goal of improve the quality of the environmental marine management in the Balearic Islands, my homeland. These are the objectives of Marilles, the 2019 English Annual Report and the 2020 Annual report (in spanish only for the moment)

I'm with Marilles under a contract as an independent consultant for different projects. In 2018 I conducted a compilation ot the financial efforts done in the Balearics to create and maintain MPAs

In 2019 I started coordinating, on a part-time basis, the Marilles MPA Labs, a set of three think-tanks, one in each island: Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza-Formentera.

These Labs are places for joining and exchanging information three times a year. You can have a look to the purpose of the MPALABS and to the ongoing diagnostic made of the MPAs.

By the end of 2019, Marilles was included in an Interreg project as one of the 10 partners, 8 of them Marine Protected Areas from Greece, Albania, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy and France. Details of the project are here.

Marilles will intensely teamwork with all the partners to give birth and disseminate the results of dozens of deliverables.
Even with the pandemics, we are succeeding in delivering the main results of the project:
  • A Natural Capital Accounting Model for the Marine Reserve of Llevant in Cala Rajada and e Methodological guide to do this kind of Models See More
  • A push to the networking of the spanish managers of Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas, gathering in a series of Webinars around the process of approval of the Master Plan for the RAMPE (the Spanish MPA Network concept approved 10 years ago, but not taking off yet...). Marilles have contracted with an experienced team from Europarc to execute these meetings. See More
By the end of November 2021 I travelled to Monaco to attend the Mediterranean MPA Forum, where more than 250 managers of MPAs (together with some 300 online) discussed the final details of the Post 2020 roadmap for MPAs.
Copied from the Forum webpage: "The Post-2020 Mediterranean MPA Roadmap (and the Forum process in general) allows the actors at different levels to identify priority actions and coordination mechanisms in order to boost the implementation of international MPA objectives in the Mediterranean, and in particular supports the Post-2020 Regional Strategy for MCPAs and OECMs of the Barcelona Convention to be adopted by the Barcelona Convention COP 22 in December 2021. The Post-2020 Mediterranean MPA Roadmap process will set up an implementation mechanism follow-up and evaluation process with key indicators to monitor."

Also, with my consultancy team in Pandion, we are pushing some exciting projects:
  • The identification of actions to be done in the Palma Boat Show to improve sustainability of the show and promote the dissemination of initiatives of the exhibitors.
  • The start of the operations of a new company, Ocean Observer SL, and the launch of the new sustainable electric boat Hybo39 'Stenella' (spanish version). Check the boat characteristics and process of construction here
  • Soon we launch a crowdfunding to fund 100 days onboard Stenella, fostering the projects of 10 researchers/divulgators, 10 days each. You can see the presentation and 10 videos in the youtube list below

Crossing the MED since 2008
In the strange year 2020 we sailed around Sicily and Sardinia between 15 aug and 30 sept. Our 12m Ketch GoOn has capacity to conduct discrete fishing research.
